- Typically October – May — October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May. Earlier in the south, later in the north.
- Where it grows
- Garden beds, damp lawns and field edges — greenest in the cool months.
- How to know it
- Sprawling mats with small opposite oval leaves and a single line of fine hairs running up one side of the stem, switching sides at each leaf pair. Stretch the stem: an elastic inner core.
- Look-alikes
- Scarlet pimpernel is toxic and grows alongside; it has orange-red flowers, square stems and no line of hairs.
- Harvest and use
- Mild raw green, best in winter salads and pesto.
