- When
- Typically March – October — March, April, May, September, October. Earlier in the south, later in the north.
- Where it grows
- Lawns, meadows, roadside edges — anywhere the ground has been disturbed.
- How to know it
- A basal rosette of jagged, backward-pointing lobes, a hollow leafless stalk with milky sap, and one flower per stalk.
- Look-alikes
- Cat's ear and hawkweed are hairy and harmless. Avoid sprayed lawns rather than avoiding the plant.
- Harvest and use
- Young leaves before flowering are least bitter; flowers for fritters and wine; roots roasted.
