- When
- Typically May – September — May, June, July, August, September. Earlier in the south, later in the north.
- Where it grows
- Gardens, field edges and any freshly turned soil — one of the commonest weeds on the continent.
- How to know it
- Goosefoot-shaped leaves with a mealy white bloom on the undersides that beads water; ridged stems, often red-streaked.
- Look-alikes
- Take a moment to distinguish from young nightshade — nightshade leaves lack the white mealy coating and the plant later carries green or black berries.
- Harvest and use
- Better than spinach, cooked the same way. Seeds are a quinoa relative.
