Wild raspberries

- When
- Typically July – August — July, August. Earlier in the south, later in the north.
- Where it grows
- Sunny edges, old clearcuts, burns and fence lines.
- How to know it
- Compound berry that pulls free of its core, leaving a hollow thimble. Canes are prickly, leaves white-woolly underneath.
- Look-alikes
- No dangerous look-alikes among the brambles — everything in Rubus is edible.
- Harvest and use
- Fresh, jam, or frozen on a tray the day you pick.
