Wild strawberry
Fragaria virginiana
- When
- Typically June – July — June, July. Earlier in the south, later in the north.
- Where it grows
- Sunny meadows, old fields, forest edges and roadside banks.
- How to know it
- Three toothed leaflets, white five-petalled flowers, and a small red berry with seeds sitting in tiny pits on the surface.
- Look-alikes
- Mock strawberry (Potentilla indica) has yellow flowers and a bland, upward-pointing berry. Harmless, just tasteless.
- Harvest and use
- Eat on the spot — they don't travel. Ten times the flavour of a supermarket berry.
