What's biting

• Largemouth Bass

  Where: Shallow coves and creek channels in Lakes Travis and Buchanan; structure like submerged timber and rock ledges.

  Early morning and dusk are prime; water temps still 32–34°C (90–93°F), so fish deeper structure during midday. Topwater lures and soft plastics near cover work best.

  Caution: Catch-and-release recommended in September heat to reduce stress on fish.

• Catfish (Channel & Blue)

  Where: Main lake channels and deeper holes in Travis and Buchanan; also the Colorado River below Mansfield Dam.

  Fish dawn and dusk with cut shad, chicken liver, or stink baits. Deeper holes (6–9 m / 20–30 ft) hold fish during the day; move to shallower flats at night.

  Caution: Blue catfish can exceed 30 kg (66 lbs); use heavy tackle and secure your rod.

• Crappie (Black & White)

  Where: Brush piles and submerged timber in the main lake body and creek arms of Travis and Buchanan.

  Jigs and small minnows fished vertically around structure in 3–6 m (10–20 ft) of water. Early morning bite is strongest.

  Caution: Crappie are sensitive to heat; fish early or move to deeper, cooler zones.

• Sunfish (Bluegill & Longear)

  Where: Shallow weed beds, dock pilings, and rocky shorelines in both lakes and smaller Hill Country creeks.

  Small jigs, crickets, or live minnows in 1–3 m (3–10 ft) of water. Excellent for beginners and children; active year-round.

  Caution: None; excellent table fare if kept.

• Striped Bass (Landlocked)

  Where: Deep channels and main lake structure in Lakes Travis and Buchanan; also below Mansfield Dam in the Colorado River.

  Fish early morning with live shad or large swimbaits in 6–12 m (20–40 ft) of water. Stripers school; find one, find many.

  Caution: Check current size and bag limits with Texas Parks & Wildlife before keeping fish.
