What's biting

• Striped Bass (Stripers)

  Where: Brackish estuaries and river mouths—Hillsborough River, Yorke River, and coastal shallows near Charlottetown Harbour; look for structure and current breaks.

  Early fall is prime: water still 15–16°C. Work live mackerel, herring, or eels near dawn and dusk around pilings and rocky points. Cast or troll shallow (1–3 m) along edges where freshwater meets salt.

  Caution: Stripers are highly regulated on PEI; check current size, season, and daily limits at the provincial regulator before fishing.

• Atlantic Mackerel

  Where: Nearshore waters and harbours throughout Charlottetown area; abundant in open water and around wharves.

  Mackerel are schooling and aggressive in September. Use small shiny spoons, spinners, or live sand eels; vertical jigging works well in 3–8 m depths. Morning and evening peaks, but daytime action is reliable.

  Caution: None specific, but confirm current regulations and any size/bag limits with PEI Fishing & Angling.

• Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)

  Where: Cool headwater streams and small rivers inland—Morell River, Brudenell River system, and spring-fed tributaries; avoid warm, low-water sections.

  Water temps are dropping into the ideal 12–15°C range. Use small dry flies or nymphs early morning, or drift live insects (mayfly nymphs, caddis larvae) in deeper pools. Spin gear with small spoons also effective.

  Caution: Brook trout are native and protected; verify season dates, size limits, and catch-and-release rules with the regulator before wetting a line.

• Sea-run Brown Trout

  Where: River mouths and lower estuaries—Morell, Brudenell, and Hillsborough rivers where they enter tidal water; also coastal beaches with freshwater seeps.

  Fall migration peaks now. Fish early morning or dusk with small silver spoons, streamers, or live sand eels in 0.5–2 m of water where rivers meet salt.

  Caution: Sea-run browns are less common than brook trout but equally regulated; check PEI regulations for season status and any special restrictions.

• Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus)

  Where: Sandy and muddy bottoms in harbours and estuaries—Charlottetown Harbour, Hillsborough estuary, and deeper channels 3–8 m.

  Fall feeding is strong as water cools. Drop small live sand eels, silversides, or clam on light tackle to the bottom; jigging gently works well. Fish slack tide or slow current.

  Caution: Flounder are food fish with specific regulations; confirm season, size, and limits before keeping any catch.
