What's biting

• Largemouth Bass

  Where: Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Lewisville, Trinity River backwaters and oxbow lakes; structure-heavy areas with fallen timber and vegetation.

  Early fall bite is strong as water cools slightly. Target deeper structure (4–6 m / 13–20 ft) in morning and evening; use soft plastics, crankbaits, or topwater near dawn. Midday, retreat to shaded timber.

  Caution: Check TPWD regulations for current size and bag limits before fishing.

• Catfish (Channel & Blue)

  Where: Trinity River main channel, Lake Ray Hubbard deeper holes, Lake Lewisville dam tailrace; sandy/muddy bottom structure.

  September heat keeps catfish active at night and early morning. Fish cut shad, chicken liver, or stink baits near bottom in 3–5 m (10–16 ft) of water. Expect steady action after sunset.

  Caution: Verify current regulations and any water-quality advisories with TPWD.

• Crappie (Black & White)

  Where: Lake Ray Hubbard and Lake Lewisville creek arms, brush piles, and standing timber; 2–4 m (6–13 ft) depth.

  Fall transition begins; crappie move to slightly deeper structure. Use small jigs (1/8–1/4 oz / 3.5–7 g) or live minnows around submerged wood. Early morning and late afternoon are prime.

  Caution: Confirm minimum size and daily limit with TPWD before keeping fish.

• Sunfish (Bluegill, Longear)

  Where: Lake margins, creek inlets, and shallow flats with aquatic vegetation; 0.5–2 m (1.5–6 ft).

  Abundant and reliable year-round. Small spinners, dry flies, or live crickets work well. Vegetation is still thick in September; cast to pockets and edges.

  Caution: Generally abundant with no special restrictions, but always check TPWD for local rules.

• Carp (Common & Grass)

  Where: Trinity River slower sections, lake flats with soft bottom, and backwater areas; often visible cruising shallows.

  September heat concentrates carp in deeper holes by midday. Fish corn, dough balls, or specialized carp baits early and late. Sight-fishing in shallows at dawn can be productive.

  Caution: No regulated season in Texas, but respect private property and check local access rules.
