What's biting

• Largemouth Bass

  Where: Shallow weed beds and structure in reservoirs like Geist and Morse; creek channels in the White River system.

  Early fall means bass are feeding hard before cooler water sets in. Work topwater lures and soft plastics around submerged timber and aquatic vegetation; fish dawn and dusk when water temps drop below 27°C (80°F).

  Caution: Catch-and-release recommended to maintain population; handle with wet hands.

• Bluegill & Sunfish

  Where: Pond margins, shallow bays, and dock pilings throughout the White River drainage and small lakes.

  Peak feeding in early fall. Small jigs, crickets, and waxworms work reliably; fish 0.5–2 m (2–6 ft) deep near vegetation.

• Channel Catfish

  Where: Deep holes and current breaks in the White River, Eel River, and larger reservoirs.

  Nocturnal feeders; use chicken liver, cut shad, or stink baits on the bottom after sunset. Fish the deeper pools where current slows.

• Crappie (Black & White)

  Where: Brush piles, fallen trees, and dock structure in lakes and reservoirs; creek channels.

  September is excellent for crappie. Vertical jigging with small minnows or jigs in 2–4 m (6–12 ft) of water yields consistent results, especially at dawn.

• Walleye

  Where: Deeper structure and rocky areas in Geist Reservoir and larger impoundments; river ledges.

  Low-light periods (dawn, dusk, overcast) are prime. Live shiners or small crankbaits near drop-offs in 3–6 m (10–20 ft) of water.
