AI field guide · refreshed weeklyLos Angeles Fishing: Early Fall in the Basin
What's biting
Largemouth Bass
Where: San Gabriel River, Los Angeles River, and urban reservoirs (Sepulveda Basin, Dominguez Gap Wetlands); also private ponds and golf course lakes.
Early fall means cooling water and active feeding. Fish dawn and dusk with topwater plugs, soft plastics (4–6 inch), or live bluegill in 1–3 m (3–10 ft) of water near structure—fallen trees, reeds, and rocky banks. Expect better action as September progresses.
Caution: Check local access rules; many urban waters are restricted. Verify catch-and-release or possession limits with CDFW.
Bluegill & Sunfish
Where: Same urban reservoirs and river systems; abundant in shallow, weedy margins.
Reliable year-round. Use small spinners, wet flies, or live crickets in 0.5–1.5 m (2–5 ft) near vegetation. Excellent for beginners and children.
Caution: None; abundant and generally good eating if regulations permit.
Striped Bass (Rockfish)
Where: Long Beach Harbor, San Pedro Bay, and coastal jetties; occasional in lower LA River near the harbor.
Fall migration begins; target early morning on live anchovies, sardines, or mullet near pilings and rocky structure in 2–5 m (6–16 ft). Stripers are strong fighters and excellent table fare.
Caution: Saltwater license required. Check CDFW for current season dates, size, and bag limits before fishing.
Halibut (California Halibut)
Where: San Pedro Bay, Long Beach Harbor, and nearshore sandy bottoms 3–10 m (10–33 ft) depth.
Early fall is productive. Drift live or fresh mackerel, anchovy, or squid over sandy flats; jigging small shads also works. Fish slack tide or slow current.
Caution: Saltwater license required. Verify minimum size and bag limits with CDFW before keeping.
California Corbina
Where: Beaches from Santa Monica to Long Beach; sandy shallows and surf zone.
Fall run peaks as water cools. Wade or fish from shore with live sand crabs, small shrimp, or sand eel imitations in 0.5–2 m (2–6 ft). Dawn and dusk are best.
Caution: Saltwater license required. Check CDFW for current regulations and size limits.
Best times
Early morning (05:00–08:00) and evening (17:00–20:00) are prime. The waning crescent and approaching new moon (11 Sept) favor low-light feeding. Slack tide and early flood tide are best for saltwater species. Avoid midday heat and strong afternoon winds (forecast shows 16–18 km/h gusts).

Regulations
California requires a valid fishing license (freshwater or saltwater, depending on venue). Bag limits, size restrictions, and seasonal closures vary by species and water body. Always check the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website (https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing) before you fish—regulations change and are strictly enforced. Urban rivers and reservoirs often have local access restrictions; confirm public access and any catch-and-release-only rules before heading out.
