What's biting
Coho Salmon
Where: Nanaimo Harbour, Protection Island approaches, nearshore rocky reefs; also Nanaimo River estuary on incoming tide.
Peak early-fall run now. Fish small spoons (1/4–1/2 oz), spinners, or herring strips in 3–8 m (10–26 ft) of water. Work current breaks and rocky points at slack or early flood tide.
Caution: Confirm current season and daily catch limits with BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis before fishing.
Cutthroat Trout
Where: Freshwater lakes: Brannan Lake, Nanaimo Lakes (North and South), and smaller ponds in the Nanaimo River watershed.
Fall feeding period. Use small spinners, dry flies (caddis patterns), or live minnows near weed beds and drop-offs in 2–4 m (6–13 ft). Early morning and dusk are most productive.
Caution: Verify species-specific regulations and retention rules; some waters have catch-and-release only.
Largemouth Bass
Where: Brannan Lake, Nanaimo Lakes, and shallow bays with aquatic vegetation.
Still active in 17–18°C (63–64°F) water. Fish topwater lures, soft plastics, or crankbaits around submerged wood and weed edges in early morning.
Caution: Check current regulations for season status and any size/catch restrictions.
Lingcod
Where: Nanaimo Harbour, Gabriola Passage, rocky reefs and kelp beds in 8–20 m (26–65 ft).
Fall feeding peak. Drop heavy jigs (6–10 oz) or live herring to bottom; work slowly. Slack tide and early flood are best.
Caution: Saltwater species; confirm marine regulations and daily limits with BC Saltwater Fishing Regulations.
Pacific Herring
Where: Nanaimo Harbour, Protection Island, nearshore waters with baitfish activity.
Small spoons, sabiki rigs, or herring jigs in 2–6 m (6–20 ft). Fish on the move; look for surface disturbance and diving birds.
Caution: Saltwater species; check marine regulations for current season and retention limits.
Best times
Early morning (dawn to 09:00) and dusk (17:00–sunset) are most productive. Slack tide and early flood tide favour both freshwater and saltwater species. Calm days (forecast shows light wind 11–12 km/h on Sept 11 and 13–14) will be best for boat and shore access.
