What's biting

• Smallmouth Bass

  Where: Rocky shorelines and drop-offs along the Niagara River; weed beds and structure in shallow bays of Lake Ontario.

  Early fall is prime time as water cools to 19°C (66°F). Fish topwater plugs and soft plastics near dawn and dusk; deeper structure mid-day. Target 2–4 m (6–13 ft) depths.

  Caution: Catch-and-release encouraged; check Ontario regulations for size and possession limits.

• Largemouth Bass

  Where: Shallow weedy areas and marshes around the mouth of the Niagara River; backwater bays with emergent vegetation.

  Cooler water triggers feeding. Work soft plastics and crankbaits through remaining weed cover in 1–2 m (3–6 ft) of water, especially early morning.

  Caution: Verify current season status and regulations before fishing.

• Walleye

  Where: Deeper channels and drop-offs of the Niagara River; Lake Ontario's nearshore zone (3–6 m / 10–20 ft).

  Fall migration begins; fish live baitfish (shiners, minnows) or jigging with soft plastics near structure. Low-light periods (dawn, dusk, overcast) are most productive.

• Yellow Perch

  Where: Shallow, weedy areas and near-shore zones of Lake Ontario; river mouth and bay structures.

  Abundant and active in fall. Use small jigs (1/8–1/4 oz / 3.5–7 g) with live minnows or soft plastics in 1–3 m (3–10 ft) of water.

  Caution: Generally abundant; check local limits.

• Lake Trout

  Where: Deeper offshore waters of Lake Ontario (6–15 m / 20–50 ft); cooler thermocline zones.

  Early fall cooling brings trout shallower. Troll spoons or live baitfish, or jig vertically over structure. Best in low-light conditions.

  Caution: Lake trout is a regulated species; verify season and size restrictions before targeting.
