What's biting

• Largemouth Bass

  Where: Neuse River backwater channels, Lake Benson, Crabtree Creek impoundments; shallow vegetation and structure in 1–2 m (3–6 ft) of water.

  Early fall means bass are transitioning from deep summer haunts to shallower feeding zones. Work topwater early and late; soft plastics (4-inch worms, crawfish) around submerged timber and lily pads during midday. Water is still warm (23°C soil temp suggests 24–26°C surface); fish will be active.

  Caution: Verify current catch-and-release or size regulations with NCWRC before keeping any fish.

• Channel Catfish

  Where: Neuse River main channel and deeper holes; Lake Benson; Crabtree Valley Lake. Best in 2–4 m (6–13 ft) depth.

  Catfish feed heavily in early fall. Use chicken liver, cut mullet, or stink bait fished on the bottom at dawn and dusk. No moon phase advantage this week (waning crescent), but low light periods will still be productive.

• Crappie (Black & White)

  Where: Brush piles and submerged structure in Lake Benson and Crabtree Valley Lake; 1–3 m (3–10 ft) depth.

  Crappie are schooling now; find one and you'll find more. Use small jigs (1/16–1/8 oz) tipped with minnows or live shiners. Early morning and overcast conditions (rain expected Sept 12–13) will be best.

• Bluegill & Redear Sunfish

  Where: Shallow weed edges, docks, and fallen trees in any local pond or lake; 0.5–1.5 m (1.5–5 ft).

  Panfish are reliable and abundant. Small poppers, dry flies, or live crickets work well. Excellent for beginners and a productive evening option when larger species are slow.

• Carp

  Where: Neuse River slower sections, Lake Benson shallows; muddy bottoms and weed edges.

  Common carp are underrated and strong fighters. Use corn, dough balls, or pack bait in early morning. Sight-fishing in clear shallows (0.5–1 m / 1.5–3 ft) is possible on calm days like Sept 8–9.
