What's biting

• Largemouth Bass

  Where: Backwater sloughs, lily pad edges, and submerged timber in the Mississippi River floodplain; also lakes and ponds throughout the metro area.

  Early fall is prime time as water cools and bass move shallower. Fish topwater lures and soft plastics near structure at dawn and dusk; try 2–3 m (6–10 ft) depths in main lake basins as the week progresses.

  Caution: Handle carefully—sharp gill plates and spines can cut.

• Channel Catfish

  Where: Main channel of the Mississippi River, deeper holes, and slower eddies; also in the Missouri River confluence area.

  Still active in warm water; use cut bait (shad, bluegill) or chicken liver in deeper holes (4–6 m / 12–20 ft). Fish at dusk and night when water is calmest; the light rain on Sept 10 will improve conditions.

  Caution: Spines are venomous—handle with care and wear gloves if possible.

• Smallmouth Bass

  Where: Rocky shoals, current breaks, and deeper pools in the Mississippi and Missouri rivers; also in clear-water lakes.

  Smallmouths are more active in cooler water than largemouths. Target 1.5–3 m (5–10 ft) depths with crankbaits and jigs; the forecast cooling trend Sept 10–11 will trigger feeding.

  Caution: None specific, but respect private land and boat traffic on major rivers.

• Crappie (Black and White)

  Where: Brush piles, fallen trees, and dock pilings in backwater lakes and oxbow lakes near the Mississippi floodplain.

  Early fall crappie bite is excellent; use small jigs (1/8–1/4 oz) or live minnows in 1–2 m (3–6 ft) of water around structure. Fish early morning and late afternoon.

  Caution: None specific.

• Common Carp

  Where: Shallow backwater areas, oxbow lakes, and slow-moving sections of the Mississippi; also in ponds and retention areas.

  Carp are feeding actively in warm water. Use corn, dough balls, or boilies in 1–2 m (3–6 ft) of water; watch for cruising fish in clear shallows at dawn. Patient stalking often beats blind casting.

  Caution: Carp are strong fighters—use 15–20 lb (7–9 kg) test minimum and set the hook firmly.
