What's biting

• Largemouth Bass

  Where: Shallow bays, weed edges, and backwater areas of the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and inland lakes like Houghton Lake and Crooked Lake.

  Early fall is prime time as water cools and bass move to deeper weed lines and structure. Fish early morning or late evening with topwater plugs, soft plastics (4–6 inch), or live shiners in 1.5–3 m (5–10 ft) of water.

  Caution: Check Michigan DNR for current season status and size/bag limits before fishing.

• Smallmouth Bass

  Where: Rocky shorelines, drop-offs, and deeper structure in Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and Lake Huron tributaries.

  Smallmouth are active in 15–21°C (59–70°F) water; target rocky points and deeper holes with crankbaits, jigs, or live crayfish. Early morning produces best.

  Caution: Verify current regulations and any catch-and-release requirements.

• Walleye

  Where: Detroit River main channel, Lake St. Clair deeper basins, and inland lakes with sand/mud bottoms.

  Fall walleye bite strengthens as water cools; fish dawn and dusk with live shiners, jigs tipped with minnow, or crankbaits in 2–4 m (6–13 ft) of water.

  Caution: Walleye seasons and limits vary by water body; consult Michigan DNR before targeting.

• Channel Catfish

  Where: Detroit River slower pools, Lake St. Clair shallows, and inland lake channels.

  Still active in warm water; use chicken liver, cut shad, or stink bait on the bottom at dusk or overnight. Fish 1–2 m (3–6 ft) deep near structure.

  Caution: No specific caution, but verify current regulations.

• Bluegill and Sunfish

  Where: Shallow weedy bays, pond margins, and backwater areas throughout the region.

  Panfish remain active; use small jigs (1/32–1/16 oz), crickets, or waxworms in 0.5–1.5 m (2–5 ft) near vegetation. Excellent for beginners and families.
