What's biting

• Arctic Char

  Where: Clear, cold streams and lakes in the Chena and Tanana drainages; Birch Lake, Harding Lake, and smaller alpine lakes above 300 m (1000 ft).

  Peak feeding before freeze-up; use small spinners, spoons, or dry flies in fast current. Fish early morning or dusk when water temps drop below 10°C.

  Caution: Handle gently—char bruise easily and are susceptible to infection.

• Northern Pike

  Where: Slow backwater channels, oxbow lakes, and weed edges of the Tanana and Chena rivers; Minto Flats area (check access rules).

  Aggressive feeding as water cools; cast large streamers, pike flies, or 7–10 cm (3–4 in) lures along vegetation. Retrieve with jerky pauses.

  Caution: Pike have sharp teeth and gill plates—use a net and keep hands clear.

• Lake Trout (Mackinaw)

  Where: Deep lakes: Birch Lake, Harding Lake, and other glacial-fed reservoirs with depths >20 m (65 ft).

  Suspended in cooler deep water; jigging with small spoons or live baitfish near thermocline. Early morning or late evening most productive.

  Caution: None specific, but respect private property around lake access points.

• Grayling

  Where: Clear, fast tributaries of the Chena and Tanana; Salcha River, Goodpaster River, and smaller creeks above 100 m elevation.

  Feeding heavily before freeze-up; dry flies (size 12–16), small nymphs, or spinners in riffles and pools. Water temps 5–8°C ideal.

  Caution: Grayling are delicate; handle minimally and release quickly if practicing catch-and-release.

• Burbot (Ling)

  Where: Deep channels and holes in the Tanana and Chena rivers; lakes with muddy bottoms.

  Nocturnal; fish after dark with small live baitfish, jigging spoons, or bottom-bouncing techniques. Most active in September as water cools.

  Caution: Burbot are slimy and can be difficult to handle; use a net and wet hands.
