Apr–Jun — April, May, June, September, October, November. Earlier in the south, later in the north.
Where it holds
Undercut banks, log jams and deep runs in rivers; big ones feed at night.
How to know it
Butter-brown flanks with black and red spots ringed in pale halos; few or no spots on the tail.
What to know
Introduced from Europe, and the wariest trout in the river. Big browns are nocturnal.
The tactic
Streamers at dusk and after dark; drifted nymphs by day.
