Jul–Oct — July, August, September, October. Earlier in the south, later in the north.
Where to look
A big orb web strung between tall plants, usually rebuilt each morning.
How to know it
Striking black and yellow, with a heavy zig-zag band of silk down the middle of the web.
What it does for you
Harmless to people and a serious predator of flying pests. Walk around the web rather than through it.
